The beginner's guide to adaptogens: what they are and how to start
The Advina team2 min read

"Adaptogen" is a word you'll see on a lot of labels at the moment. It describes a group of herbs and mushrooms that have been used for centuries in traditional practices such as Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine.
Where the name comes from
The term was coined in the mid-20th century to describe plants traditionally used to help the body cope with the demands of everyday life. Today it's a broad, informal category rather than a scientific one.
Three to know
- Ashwagandha — a root central to Ayurveda for more than 3,000 years, traditionally taken in the evening. Our Ashwagandha Root Extract uses a standardised extract.
- Lion's mane — a striking, shaggy mushroom long valued in East Asian cooking and traditional practice.
- Rhodiola — a hardy plant from cold, mountainous regions, traditionally used in Scandinavia and Russia.
Adaptogens are about consistency, not quick fixes: they're traditionally taken daily, over weeks.
How to start
- Choose one. Starting with a single adaptogen makes it easier to notice how it fits your routine.
- Check the extract. Look for a standardised extract with the amount per serving clearly stated.
- Be patient. Give it a few weeks of daily use before deciding whether it's for you.
- Keep a note. A short daily note on sleep, energy and mood helps you see patterns.
Who should take care
Adaptogens aren't suitable for everyone. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, have a medical condition, or take any medication, speak to your GP or pharmacist first.
